About
Kia ora, I’m Gigi — Creative Director of Geegebee.
I created Geegebee to open the doors of my creative practice to more collaboration. Through my work, travels and time living in France, I’ve come to realise that so much good creative work begins with people: different perspectives, community, little moments of connection and the energy that comes from making something together is really a thing of magic.
What began as my freelance animation and illustration practice has grown into a small studio model, connecting my own work with a wider network of animators, illustrators, designers and makers.
At her core, Geegebee is about storytelling, collaboration and creating work with authenticity, character and care.
Painting & Observation
Painting is an important part of how I slow down, observe, and understand the world around me. It’s a quieter part of my creative practice, but it has always been a cornerstone of the work I make.
My painting practice began in Christchurch as a teenager, where I learnt to oil paint in the basement of the Bryce Gallery under master oil painter Min Kim, who’s consistently remained an inspiration and source of knowledge into my adulthood. She taught me to look closely – at colour, light, form, people, creatures and the little details that give a scene life, and give moments the patience they deserve.
A lot of my inspiration for animation, illustration and design comes from taking the time to sit with a place, a person, a creature or a small everyday moment, and paint what I notice. Painting helps me gather colour, texture, feeling and perspective – little bouts of inspiration that often find their way back into the animated and illustrated worlds I create.
Gigi’s other creative collaborations – beyond the screen.
Beyond the screen, Gigi’s creative work often moves into more hands-on spaces – from workshops and jewellery to apparel, events and multi-discipline collaborations. These projects help keep her creative practice playful, practical and connected to people.
