The Arcobaleno Home Original IP

The Arcobaleno Home is a surrealist 12 episode animated web series IP, which contemplates ideas of the afterlife and what it would mean to find someone you loved on the other side, with a surrealist lens in a cartoon medium.

POSTER

The series follows Berry’s story, as she wakes up in a geometrical garden, having lost her memory, and comes across a decrepit house.

Here, she meets a colourful cast of characters, souls who have passed on. Remembering nothing from their lives, they pass through magical doors that show them memories from their past, with secrets that will help them remember who they are and allow them to pass on to the next stage of the afterlife. Failing to find their memories will result in the garden absorbing them, and dying a second death inside the garden, a corroding limbo.

The main threat of the garden are the mollusk-like creatures that wander, as blank canvases, seeking tangibility. They are unstable, absorbing memories from the doors and characters, and emerge as manifestations of the characters’ lives. They reside in the garden, which becomes a dreamlike landscape of plants and a junkyard of distorted memory.

Buttons, a mysterious girl who lives in the chaos of the abstracted foliage, lies in the centre of the garden’s mysteries. She, having been stuck here longer than any other of the characters, is the garden’s origin story – the world being a manifestation of herself, she is the garden and the garden is her. She doesn’t know anything about who she is, but finds comfort in the chaos of the garden, where her only friend is a creature manifested as a small green dog named Beans.

Berry explores the garden, despite the others being fearful and reluctant to explore outside the house. This is where she befriends Buttons and finds a strange comfort in their time together in this distorted and surreal land.

Episode by episode, Buttons withers away, her colour and demeanor turning blue as she slowly gets corrupted by the distorted version of her dog that she can’t let go of, while the other characters find stories from their lives in the doors. Berry sees everyone find their memories but they are unable to move on like they thought they would. As the garden edges nearer the house, everyone starts to get more and more desperate in their search. Seeing this, Berry changes her approach from finding out about her own past, to instead searching for Buttons’ door. The world quickly decays as Buttons does, and the countdown is on.

During an eclectic search party, the worlds in the doors begin to also concave as this limbo does. Berry finds the memory that saves Buttons and her friends, just moments before the collapse, and it’s revealed they were best friends in real life, and the memory that saved everyone was actually in one of Berry’s doors.
